About Our School

North Balgowlah School of Dance has been providing excellence in dance education on Sydney’s Northern Beaches for more than 29 years. We conduct classes for boys and girls of all ages from 3 years old, Monday to Saturday as well as adult ballet classes.

Our RAD qualified principal, Teresa Geraghty and our team of talented teachers specialise in Classical Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Contemporary, Tap and Musical Theatre. North Balgowlah School of Dance is the only dance school in the Southern Hemisphere currently teaching the innovative new Rambert Contemporary syllabus developed in London.

We believe in encouraging each and every student to achieve their potential and gain confidence through the development of fitness, movement, musicality and strong dance technique. We pride ourselves on providing the best dance environment for your child whether it’s for the fun and enjoyment of dance alone, to undertake the personal challenge of exams.

Our Teachers

Teresa Geraghty

Teresa Geraghty is the founder and Principal of North Balgowlah School of Dance. Teresa is a fully qualified teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) and the Rambert School of Contemporary Dance in London. With over 24 years of teaching experience she is a highly sought after teacher having run workshops in London and Regional NSW as well as directing her own school.

Anna Hugo

Anna Hugo is a classically trained dancer from the Northern Beaches. She studied RAD with Tanya Pearson achieving Advanced with Honours and went on to complete a Diploma in Dance at the Australian Ballet School Melbourne. There she danced with the Dancer’s company which toured around Australia. Anna completed in the Prix de Lausanne, Switzerland, and the Genee Awards, London. She has taught RAD Classical Ballet, Contemporary and Jazz for 20 years across all age groups at dance schools and primary/high schools. She has also adjudicated at various eisteddfods and scholarships.

Lissa Woolven

Lissa Woolven has been dancing for more than 20 years, since age 3. She has taught dance for Teresa for over 10 years. After completing her HSC and receiving band 6 and 'call backs' in her major and core performances, Lissa then studied dance full time at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts majoring in Contemporary dance. She completed the RAD Advanced 1 and Advanced 2 ISTD Modern exam. She received her ISTD Modern Associates Certificate in 2016 and Pilates Barre qualification in 2017. Lissa also currently teaches English at a selective high school, having completed her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education (Secondary), majoring in English and Dance at Macquarie University in 2019.

Maddison Sparkes

Maddison Sparkes started dance at age 3 and has studied under Teresa Geraghty for her entire dance career. She is trained in a wide variety of genres including Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Hip-Hop, Tap and Contemporary. Maddison completed her Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Advanced 1 exam as well as her Modern Advanced 1 ISTD exam. She is currently studying a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Dance and Bachelor of Social Sciences majoring in Social Injustice at Macquarie University.

Frequently Asked Questions

We teach a broad range of dance styles from the Royal Academy of Dance programmes, specialising in Classical Ballet, Modern, Lyrical and Contemporary, Tap, Musical Theatre. We also teach an exciting contemporary programme from the world famous Rambert School in London. North Balgowlah School of Dance is the only dance school in the Southern Hemisphere teaching the Rambert syllabus, grades 1-8.

Our Tiny tots classes begin at age 3 and are for very young dancers. We offer classes for all school age children in a variety of styles. More information about dance styles can be found under the Dance menu.

Students taking ballet classes may continue right through the to the Advanced 2 level of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) syllabus. Typically students would be 17 or 18 when they complete this. We also offer adult ballet classes.

Yes, each dance style and year of achievement has specific uniform requirements. Details about uniforms can be found under the dance menu. 

Unfortunately, parents are not able to be in the dance studios with the students. There are areas close to the studios where parents can wait.  Special end of term class showcase performances are typically scheduled when possible if COVID restrictions are not in place. 

The School follows all mandatory requirements to keep students, teachers and parent communities safe and protected. 

Yes, each year at the end of November there is a fantastic showcase concert open to all families and friends. Video and photographs of the performances are made available as a keep sake
